Newcastle United defender Davide Santon has confirmed that Roma were interested in him in the off-season.
The Stadio Olimpico side were suggested as one of the clubs vying for the 21-year-old’s services as they were on the lookout for a replacement for John Arne Riise.
“Yes, Roma were interested,” Santon told Tuttomercato.
“There was talk about it, but in the end nothing concrete happened.”
“Then, Newcastle made an offer. At first, they wanted to sign me on loan, but then they decided to buy me outright, with Inter’s consent.”
Santon, who joined Newcastle in a 5.6-million-euro deal, has so far made 14 competitive appearances for the Magpies, who are sixth in the Premier League standings.
