Lyon boss Remi Garde believes his team played too carefully in their 1-0 loss to Bordeaux in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
A 41st-minute goal from Yoan Gouffran extended Lyon’s winless run in the league to three matches, leaving them 12 points adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Garde, whose side face PSG on Saturday, said not taking enough risks cost his team at Stade Chaban-Delmas.
“We have missed some freshness, even a bit of craziness. I would have liked to see my team take more risks. I didn’t see that boldness,” Garde said after the narrow loss.
“We were well-organised. I am not sure that Bordeaux had more than two shots, except when Hugo (Lloris) saved one. Apart from that, they didn’t really get close to our goal.”
“Defensively, we had a good game and we did a great job. In terms of attack, the amount of games we’ve had prevents us from being fresh.”
“The pitch didn’t allow for a quick passing game. It’s not an excuse, just an explanation. I was told they have rugby games on that pitch. It must be a great rugby pitch.”
Lyon have won just one league game this year, leaving Garde to concede the title race was over in the lead-up to the clash at Bordeaux.
Bordeaux coach Francis Gillot praised his team’s defending after seeing them extend their unbeaten run in the league to five matches.
“Defensively, we were very good. We could have done better in the first half. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are on the right track,” Gillot said.
“The team that played against us has been struggling. That means that we must be a pain to play against. We must carry on in that vein.”
