Could Brendan Rodgers be the next Tottenham boss?

According to newspaper reports Tottenham are lining up a move for Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers, if they lose Harry Redknapp to the England national team.

The Irishman has recently signed a new three and a half year contract at the Liberty Stadium but that still hasn’t stopped speculation over his future.

Promising

Brendan Rodgers is one of the most highly-rated bosses in the Premier League and has done an absolutely outstanding job in Wales. He helped the Swans achieve promotion, while playing an attractive brand of football.

Rodgers has always been highly-rated even when he was a reserve team coach at Chelsea. The Blues saw his potential straight away. He has gone onto to become a successful manager in his own right, despite a few setbacks along the way.

Style

His style and ethos as a boss very much fits in with that of Tottenham’s. Tottenham’s style of play is very attacking and they like to pass the ball. His style would fit in perfectly with Tottenham’s players as well.

Team

If he was given the opportunity of managing Tottenham he would be inheriting a fantastic squad of players. Tottenham are currently still in the hunt for the Premier League title, albeit they are outsiders and next season they could be even stronger.

However if Harry Redknapp were to leave his post at White Hart Lane it could lead to a mass exodus at the club and the next Spurs boss could have a job on his hands rebuilding the team. Rodgers has experience of building a team, just at a lower level.

Experience

Although he would seem like the perfect choice to fill Harry Redknapp’s shoes, if he did go Rodgers is considered inexperienced at Premier League level. This season is his first in the top flight but its very unlikely to be his last.

At just 39 years of age he is one of the youngest bosses in the Premier League. I think Tottenham would probably appoint a more experienced boss.

High-profile

Tottenham have always had a relatively high-profile but this season it has shot through the roof. I think Spurs may be looking for a more high-profile boss than Brendan Rodgers. There is bound to be a string of big-name foreign coaches lined-up as a contingency plan in case Redknapp decides to leave.

There could even be the ultimate job swap with former-England boss Fabio Capello being appointed as the Tottenham boss and Redknapp taking his place in the England dugout.

Unlikely

I’m not so sure that Harry Redknapp will take the England job and leave all his good work behind at Tottenham. He is just starting to build something special at White Hart Lane and leaving would make no sense at all.

Looking at it from Brendan Rodgers point of view he might feel the same way about his job at Swansea. He has also built something special in Wales and it would be hard for him to leave that behind. It would be a really shame for the club if he did leave.

He has gained promotion with the club and they have held their own in the top flight of one of the hardest leagues in the world. Not only have they held their own but they have stuck to their ethos of playing passing football.

Soon

The Tottenham job could come to quick for Rodgers but if his career continues as it is so far I’m sure he will get a top job in the future. However for now he can concentrate on keeping the Swans in the top flight and building on his good work so far.
